GPT100 2024: A Race to Remember
Share
This year’s Grampians Peaks Trail 100 Miler (GPT100) proved to be one of the most unforgettable events in Australian trail running history. With record-breaking participation and an international presence, it showcased the raw beauty and relentless challenge of one of Australia's most iconic trails.
Elite International Talent on Australian Soil
Among the highlights was the participation of elite trail runners from Hong Kong, including Stone Tsang from the North Face team, led by Ryan Blair of Asia Pacific Adventure (APA). For many of these runners, it was their first visit to Australia and their debut on the Grampians Peaks Trail. They were treated not only to the rugged volcanic landscapes and technical rocky outcrops of the Grampians but also to encounters with native wildlife like kangaroos, adding a quintessential Australian touch to the experience.
Endu1 Athlete Battles Extreme Conditions
Endu1’s own Jordan Murphy exemplified grit and determination, battling through the searing heatwave until 50km. Unfortunately, severe dehydration and heat exhaustion forced him to medically withdraw from the race. His courage and effort in such brutal conditions are a testament to the endurance spirit that defines trail running.
Trail Running Greats Shine
Lucy Bartholomew, an icon in the trail running world, delivered a masterclass in resilience and skill. She secured second place overall and first in the women’s category, demonstrating why she is considered one of the best in the sport.
From Thunderstorms to Heatwaves
Last year’s GPT100 was infamous for its brutal thunderstorms, creating some of the most grueling conditions imaginable. This year presented an entirely different challenge: a heatwave. With temperatures soaring to nearly 40 degrees Celsius at the race's start and the heat radiating off the rocks, runners faced a "sauna-like" ordeal that tested even the fittest athletes.
A Remarkable Display of Organization and Support
The race organizers, SingleTrack, received widespread praise for their meticulous planning and execution. The event was bolstered by the incredible work of Endurance Medical Service (EMS), founded by Deb Sharp, whose team ensured the safety and well-being of all participants.
Inspiring Feats of Human Spirit
Perhaps the most inspiring story came from the team at Beyond Endurance, led by our first Endu1 adaptive athlete Mick Marshall. Competing in the 100-mile stage race, they overcame immense physical and mental challenges to complete the course. Their journey epitomized the race's spirit: pushing beyond limits and enduring with an unbreakable focus on the goal.
A Trail Running Gem
The Grampians Peaks Trail continues to grow in reputation, attracting elite athletes and enthusiastic adventurers from around the world. Its combination of technical terrain, stunning landscapes, and unpredictable weather ensures it remains one of the most challenging and rewarding races on the trail running calendar.
This year’s GPT100 wasn’t just a race. It was a celebration of endurance, community, and the incredible human spirit. Whether battling heat waves or pushing through the toughest terrains, every runner at GPT100 2024 left a mark on this iconic event - and it left a mark on them in return.
